Multi Combination (MC)

Held a HR or HC class licence for at least 12 months + Commercial Driverโ€™s Health Assessment.

Upon successful completion of the Heavfinal assessment, you will be issued a Competency Certificate. This certificate must be submitted to the appropriate State or Territory Transport Licensing Authority (e.g., Access Canberra in the ACT), along with all other required documents, to upgrade your licence to the appropriate Heavy Vehicle class.

Light Rigid (LR) Licence

This licence entitles the holder to operate a vehicle: i) A vehicle with a GVM over 4.5 tonnes but not over 8 tonnes. ii) A vehicle constructed to seat more than 12 adults (including driver). iii) Towing a single trailer with GVM not over 9 tonnes.

Medium Rigid (MR) Vehicle

This licence entitles the holder to operate a vehicle: i) A rigid vehicle with 2 axles and GVM over 8 tonnes. ii) Towing a single trailer with GVM not over 9 tonnes.

"B" Condition Removal

Obtain a full licence without any conditions.

Heavy Rigid (HR) Vehicle

This licence entitles the holder to operate a vehicle: i) A rigid vehicle with 3 or more axles and GVM over 8 tonnes. ii) An articulated bus with 3 or more axles and GVM over 8 tonnes. iii) Towing a single trailer with GVM not over 9 tonnes.

Heavy Combination (HC) Vehicle

This licence entitles the holder to operate a vehicle: i) A prime mover with a single semitrailer, plus any unladen converter dolly. ii) A rigid vehicle towing a trailer with GVM over 9 tonnes, plus any unladen converter dolly.

Multi Combination (MC) Vehicle

This licence entitles the holder to operate a vehicle: i) Any heavy vehicle or combination, including B-doubles and road trains. ii) This is the highest class of vehicle licence (excluding motorcycles)

Heavy Vehicle Licensing - Trucks

An LR licence entitles you to drive the following types of Lightย Rigid Vehicles:ย 

  • With a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of over 4.5 tonnes but not over 8 tonnes.

  • That is constructed or equipped to seat more than 12 adults, including the driver.

  • Towing a single trailer with a GVM not over 9 tonnes.

Before applying or starting Light Rigid (LR) driver training, you must meet the following requirements: 

  • Hold a C class (car) full or provisional licence for at least 12 months

  • Be a minimum of 18 years old

  • Must pass the Rigid Vehicle Knowledge test.

โœ… Step 1: Pass the Rigid Vehicle Knowledge Test

  • You must pass theย Rigid Vehicle Knowledge Testย to be eligible for the LR licence class – It is valid for 2 years.
    If youโ€™ve previously passed this test and still hold a valid certificate, you do not need to retake it.

โœ… Step 2: Complete LR Driver Training & Practical Assessment

  • Undertake and pass a practical driving assessment in a Light Rigid Vehicle.
    The assessment must be conducted by an approved training provider, such as Smartto Driving Academy (SDA).ย 
    Practical Driving Assessment Certificate is valid for 3 months.

โœ… Step 3: Apply for Your Licence Upgrade

Once you have successfully passed your Practical Driving Assessment, follow the steps below to complete your licence upgrade:

๐Ÿ”น Bring the following documents with you:

  • Your ACT driver licence

  • Your Rigid Vehicle Knowledge Test certificate.

  • Your Practical Driving Assessment Certificate [issued by a training provider such as Smartto Driving Academy(SDA)], and must be issued within the last 3 months.

Awards

ACT Government Accredited Driving Assessors and Instructors:
โœ… Upon successful completion of your training and final driving test, you will receive an official Certificate of Competency.

โœ… This certificate must be submitted to the appropriate State or Territory Transport Licensing Authority โ€” for example, Access Canberra in the ACT โ€” along with the required documents in order to:

โœ… NSW Government Accredited Driving Instructor (ADI):
