Medium Rigid (MR) Licence Upgrade
Locations: Australian Capital Territory and Queanbeyan, NSW.
Learning to Drive a Medium Rigid (MR) Vehicle
A Medium Rigid (MR) licence allows you to drive certain heavy vehicles legally and safely in Australia. Below are the details of what this licence covers, the prerequisites, and the steps to upgrade your licence. ❗Please Note: SDA does have a Non-Synchromesh Gearbox vehicle available for training and assessment. This allows students to obtain an Unrestricted Licence condition, which is required for operating heavy vehicles with a non-synchromesh transmission (commonly used in the transport industry).
An MR licence entitles you to drive a medium rigid vehicle:
With 2 axles and a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of over 8 tonnes.
Towing a single trailer with a GVM not over 9 tonnes.
Before applying or starting MR driver training, you must:
-
Hold a C class (car) full or provisional licence for at least 12 months
-
Be a minimum of 18 years old
- Must pass the Heavy Rigid Vehicle Knowledge test.
- Complete a Commercial Driver’s Health Assessment (CDHA).
Step 1: Pass the Heavy Vehicle Knowledge Test and CDHA
You must pass the Rigid Vehicle Knowledge Test for the MR licence class.
If you’ve previously passed the test for a Rigid Vehicle Class and still hold a valid certificate, you do not need to repeat the test.
Complete a Commercial Driver’s Health Assessment (CDHA) – must be valid for 6 months.
Step 2: Complete LR Driver Training and Assessment
Undertake and pass a practical driving assessment in an MR vehicle.
The assessment must be conducted by an approved training provider, such as Smartto Driving Academy (SDA).
Step 3: Apply for Your Licence Upgrade
Once you have successfully passed your Practical Driving Assessment, follow the steps below to complete your licence upgrade:
Visit an Access Canberra Service Centre
Bring the following documents with you:
Your ACT driver licence
Your Heavy Rigid Vehicle Knowledge Test certificate.
Your Practical Driving Assessment certificate, and must be valid within the last 3 months.
A completed and passed Commercial Driver’s Health Assessment (CDHA).
Please note: The CDHA is mandatory for MR, HR, HC, and MC licences, and must be valid within the last 6 months. If you have already submitted a valid CDHA to Access Canberra within the last 6 months, you are not required to complete another assessment.
